In many countries, the HIV epidemics is considered concentrated among most at risk populations including men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, prisoners and sex workers. Existing HIV prevention interventions focus on injecting drug users and seem to appeal mostly to male adult population. However, recent research programs have demonstrated the urgently needed to also address the specific needs of young, female and non-injection drug users. In this symposium we will provide a global view of projects supported by Expertise France which aims to improve HIV prevention, care and treatment among substance abusers. A special focus will be given to project using innovative approaches to reach young, female and non-injection drug users across Asia, Africa and Europe. The symposium will offer a change to present new epidemiological and behavioral data, filed-tested outreach methods, and a dialogue with the scientific community on how to provide effective interventions.
